What Is A Cruise Control System?
Designed to improve driving experience, cruise control system is an innovative automobile feature commonly found in American cars. Unlike European roads, roads in the United States are bigger and straighter, and destinations are farther apart. Without a cruise control system, long road
trips would be more tiring for the driver. The main purpose of a cruise control system is to regulate
the speed of the vehicle, usually when the driver is taking a long and tiring journey. It also allows you to follow the car in front of you while continually adjusting speed to maintain a safe distance.
The brain of a cruise control system is a small computer, the electronic control module (or ECM), that
can be found under the hood or behind the dashboard. It also monitors the control so it can
tell what the desired speed is. Other than controlling the speed of your car, this device has other important functions. The cruise control system is by default turned off, but can be activated by the user. Other
than the on switch, there are also switches for set, accelerate, resume, cancel and coast features.
Almost all of these controls to operate the cruise control system are mounted on the steering
wheel which is easy to reach. The set/accel button tells the car to maintain the speed you are currently
driving. If you press it again, you can adjust minor upward in speed, and tap the coast button to minimize the
set speed. The brake pedal and clutch pedal each have a switch that disengages the cruise control. As soon
as the pedal is pressed, the system will shut off. Tapping the resume button will command the car to accelerate
back to the most recently set speed.
